Ultra-Edit. This is a fantastic text editing tool, with built in FTP, basic file comparison, and syntax highlighting included in its many features.

CygWin. This is a Unix emulator that runs on a Windows PC. This has been an invaluable tool for doing unix development (korn shell, perl, awk, etc) when access to a unix server is not an option.

GPG - Freeware compatible with PGP. This package is mostly compatible with PGP, and is a secure way of encrypting and signing data to be stored in, or transfered over, non-secure means.

SQL Edge - SQL Client that will connect to any DB. This tool uses java classes to connect to any database. I've used to to connect to Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server. The editor allows "highlight and run" to run just code snipets, as well as executing multiple statements in a single run. Data export seems to be a little weak, but for development and testing this tool has become invaluable.

WS-FTP Pro. This is a very good tool for transfering data between servers, or from a remote server to the local PC.

EDIFECS. The standard for creating EDI Standards. In addition to listing all of the permissible values for a given element (i.e. N101), it allows the user to easily create an Implementation Guide that can be easily updated and published to the trading partners that need it. In one instance, we were able to use this to automatically process six months worth of data and create an Implementation Guide based on the data that had been processed, thereby eliminating the need to check every map to see what was allowable and what wasn't. From that, a single IG was created that could then be published to new and existing trading partners.

GENTRAN discussion list. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people that monitor this list and are always ready to help a fellow EDI'er that needs a little guidance or needs another solution to a problem with the GENTRAN (including GIS) line of products.

EDI discussion list. This is a general discussion group for all matters EDI. You can find information regarding a specific translator and how it handles various issues, as well as general topics regarding EDI processing, standard procedures, and best practices.
